The Challenge: A Sinking Feeling in Finestrat

Purchasing a premium property in Sierra Cortina, Finestrat – arguably one of the most exclusive enclaves overlooking Benidorm – should be a cause for celebration. However, for our latest clients, the garden harboured a rather damp, structurally compromised secret. Their existing, dated kidney-shaped pool was actively tilting and haemorrhaging water.

The culprit: High level difference

The property sits above a dramatic 6 to 7-metre sheer drop down to the neighbouring plot. During the original house construction, the ground simply was not backfilled correctly. Over time, gravity inevitably won, causing the soil – and the swimming pool along with it – to gradually subside. As seen in the original site photograph, this was not a cosmetic issue that could be solved with a quick patch-up job. It required the serious civil engineering that elite custom pool builders like EdenPool builders are known for.

The Process: Engineering a Solid Foundation

At EdenPool, we do not believe in superficial fixes. To permanently resolve the subsidence, the only viable solution was a complete swimming pool redesign. We mercilessly ripped out the compromised structure, excavating deep down until we hit solid, unyielding ground. From there, we meticulously infilled the void with compacted gravel to create an immovable base before constructing a robust, heavy-duty gunite concrete shell.

We also took this opportunity to completely modernise the layout, transforming the tired, 1990s kidney bean shape into a sleek, contemporary L-shape design that properly respects the property’s architecture.

The Aesthetics: Rayleigh Scattering and Classic Balustrades

With the structural integrity finally secured, we turned our attention to the visual triumph. The interior was finished with breathtaking Rayleigh scattering-effect pool tiles. As beautifully highlighted in gallery pictures, these specialised mosaics manipulate the light, creating a mesmerising, iridescent aquatic glow that standard flat ceramics simply cannot achieve.

To seamlessly integrate the new L-shape pool construction into the surrounding space, we removed the old, raised white edging. We replaced it with flush, modern flat terrace tiles, elegantly blending the water’s edge with the surrounding patio. This clever architectural trick instantly makes the entire lounging area feel vastly more spacious and refined.

Finally, at the seaside boundary, a row of tired cypress trees was removed in favour of a bespoke concrete balustrade. As showcased in the images, this upgrade provides crucial structural security whilst delivering a posh, classic Mediterranean aesthetic that perfectly frames the Costa Blanca sky.
