Other commission in Bonalba Golf, Alicante, presented a familiar regional challenge: mitigating severe substrate instability to rescue a failing residential landscape. Having observed the successful delivery of a neighbouring pool by our practice, the client instructed us to replace their structurally compromised fibreglass shell with a rigorously engineered concrete alternative.

The Structural Challenge
The local terrain in Bonalba Golf is notoriously prone to subsidence. This geological reality proved fatal for the property’s original fibreglass pool, which had suffered repeated, unrepairable leaks. Furthermore, the surrounding terrace exhibited extensive, widening fissures, signalling a total failure of the supporting ground and rendering the outdoor space entirely unfit for purpose.

Site Investigation & Groundworks
Upon excavating and extracting the existing shell, the root cause of the structural failure became glaringly apparent. The original installation relied on an exceptionally thin, unreinforced concrete blinding layer, flanked entirely by loose sand rather than a stabilised backfill. This fragile sub-base had fractured completely, leaving substantial subterranean voids. We systematically demolished and cleared this compromised foundation, deeply compacting the native soil to establish a robust, load-bearing platform capable of supporting a high-mass concrete structure.

Structural Integrity: A heavy-duty, steel-reinforced concrete shell explicitly designed to withstand and bridge local soil shifts.

Water Management: A custom-built, discrete pump house enclosing a low-maintenance salt chlorination system and premium filtration mechanics.
Illumination: Customisable RGB LED lighting to elevate the evening ambience.

Architectural Finishes To anchor the new pool within its Mediterranean context, we specified resilient, tactile surface finishes. The surrounding terrace was laid with natural stone in a traditional polygonal arrangement – often referred to as crazy paving – and unified by a complementary cream grout. The pool’s elevation is handsomely retained by a textured, cream-coloured split-face concrete block wall. This masonry not only provides essential earth retention but also completes a cohesive, highly durable outdoor living space built to stand the test of time.
